Introduction Mass Customization and Personalization (MCP) aims to provide goods and services that serve individual customers' personal needs with near mass production efficiency. The World Congress on Mass Customization and Personalization (MCPC) is the largest international event of its kind to approach the field of MCP from an interdisciplinary perspective bridging scholarly research and business practice. The MCPC (2001) was also the first international conference addressing the whole value chain of MCP in an interactive dialogue between academics and practitioners.Following the examples of the MCPC 2001 and MCPC 2003, which were held with large success with an audience of up to 350 international participants, the MCPC 2005 (18-21 Sept 2005) will take again a broad and interdisciplinary perspective to address the relevant topics in MCP. Its special topic is to engage participants in the dialogue how to bridge mass customization and mass production. The MCPC 2005 will also serve as a unique forum to disseminate information to all branches of the services and manufacturing industries on the most recent progress and cutting edge innovations. We will again establish a pre-conference workshop for those who want an intense introduction into the topic, hold by well-known experts of this field. The MCPC 2005 will be held at the campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and is organized under the umbrella of The International Institute of Mass Customization and Personalization (IIMCP). The Special Seminar "MCP in China" will be held at Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Advanced Manufacturing Institute. Taking advantage of the location of the MCPC 2005 in the vibrant city of Hong Kong, an optional side event of the congress will intensify the experience for the participants (22-23 Sept 2005): A two day MCP study tour to one of China's most vibrant regions. Part of this trip is also participation in a special workshop on "MCP opportunities in China -- Chinese MCP manufacturing for the world". In addition, participants of the trip will get the chance to visit a number of manufacturing companies making use of latest mass customization capabilities (more information here).
